Battle at Hatteras: STEAM Marine Science & History

July 15, 1942 was an unfortunate day for the sailors of three Allied ships and a German U-boat patrolling off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC. Before the day was over, several would be dead, and their vessels sunk or wrecked. Then “battles of a different sort” would begin when nature took over.

Through the lens of this particular marine science scenario students learn the basics of working as part of a multi-disciplinary research team. They will investigate the science of a wreck site -- water parameters, currents, biology, sediments, geology, and topography -- and learn about the technology used. They will also gain context as they learn about the history, participants, and circumstances of that battle. Critical thinking skills are challenged as students learn how to apply all of that information to evaluate the scientific, ethical, political, and financial questions such a research mission presents. Lastly, through this class, students will learn how to make and support project decisions and gain an understanding of the wide range of professions—both scientific and non-scientific—that are required to make such research projects a success.

Note: Parents do not need to attend the lab with their child but do need to remain in the Museum.
